There was an upset in added time when his Heidenheimers lost 2-1 in Berlin. Frank Schmidt later appeared correspondingly angry.
Frank Schmidt is known as an emotional coach. After his 1. FC Heidenheim‘s 1-2 defeat in the second round of the cup at Hertha BSC, the 50-year-old once again lived up to his reputation. Because Paul Wanner supposedly equalized for the Bundesliga club in stoppage time, there was initially great celebration (read the match report here) – but then referee Dr. Robert Kampka scored the goal.
The reason: a foul by Stefan Schimmer on Hertha’s Márton Dárdai, which was reported by the linesman. But Schmidt didn’t agree with that at all – especially with regard to the timing: “The linesman has to stop the game then and not just when the ball is in the goal. Then he suddenly remembers that there was a foul beforehand.” , explained Schmidt on Sky.
However, the Heidenheimer did not want to blame the elimination solely on the referee team. “The referees played a really good game, but in the scene it wasn’t according to the rules. I’m sorry about that,” added Schmidt.
To explain: In the first two cup rounds there is no video referee who checks decisions accordingly. When the interviewer pointed out that there had been no foul beforehand, Schmidt replied: “That’s still on top of that. But I haven’t seen it yet and don’t want to judge it. What’s important to me is the overall process. The game went well Then the cross hits the second post, then the goal comes – and then the flag goes up like a delayed offside decision.
Schmidt didn’t really calm down at the subsequent press conference, where t-online was also there. “What disappoints me the most, I say that openly and honestly, but actually we shouldn’t be in here (press conference room, editor’s note) but should be out there in the stadium,” said the Heidenheim native, who runs the club from the amateur camp to the Bundesliga.
Then he added: “We make it 2-2 and then the linesman suddenly remembers: Yes, by the way, there was a push, a push. If that was the case, then as a linesman I have to have the courage and If I don’t do that, then I can’t say ten seconds later: We can’t let the goal count, there was a foul.”
