FC Bayern easily won in Mainz and reached the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. A strong half is enough for Munich to decide the game. The best man was once again Jamal Musiala with a hat-trick.
Thanks to magic foot Jamal Musiala, record winners FC Bayern Munich defeated the second-round curse in the DFB Cup and easily reached the round of 16 of the competition. The outstanding national player led the Bundesliga leaders with three goals to an unchallenged 4-0 (4-0) win at FSV Mainz 05.
In front of 33,305 spectators in the sold-out Mainz Arena, Musiala scored in the 2nd, 37th and 45th + 4 minutes. In addition, Leroy Sané (45th + 1) was successful for the Munich team, who are superior in all respects and have already won the pot 20 times.
Bayern, who had failed in the second round of the cup three times in the past four years, were serious from the start. Not even 90 seconds had been played before the ball was already in the net of the Mainz goal. Musiala ice-coldly completed a quick attack based on an assist from Kane.
The early lead also played into the already favored Munich team, where Sané was in the starting line-up for the first time this season. Mainz didn’t get a chance at all against the guests who were confident on the ball and the Bayern defense, in which Dayot Upamecano was missing due to a bruised thigh, was hardly ever embarrassed.
However, the record champions initially failed to extend their result. Serge Gnabry missed the biggest opportunity. After a rebound from Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner, the offensive man first put the ball against the post and then shot from three meters next to the empty goal.
The lack of video evidence helps Bayern
After half an hour, Sané also missed the second goal when he missed Zentner after a beautiful solo. The 05 goalkeeper, who suffered a bleeding wound above his eye in an unfortunate collision with Kane in the early stages, was the rock in the surf, and not just in this scene.
But even Zentner couldn’t prevent the second goal. After a cross from Sané, Kane’s header failed to hit the Mainz goalkeeper, but Musiala headed the rebound over the line. Lucky for Bayern: The goalscorer was offside during the action, but the referee team didn’t recognize this. Since the video evidence is not used in the second round of the cup, the actually irregular hit counted.
Shortly before the half-time whistle, the Munich team made everything clear with a double strike. First, Sané completed a quick counterattack via Kane and Alphonso Davies with a well-placed low shot, then Musiala scored from close range.
Given the comfortable cushion, Musiala and Kane were allowed to end their work day during the half-time break and stay in the dressing room to shower. This didn’t change Bayern’s dominance, even though goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was called upon for the first time after just under an hour with a shot from Karim Onisiwo.
Without exerting themselves too much, the Munich team completed their workload until the final whistle and saved their energy for the tasks ahead. The only downer was that defender Eric Dier had to leave the field injured in the final phase.
