Third division team Arminia Bielefeld caused a huge surprise and knocked Bundesliga club Union Berlin out of the DFB Cup.
Marius Wörl (12th minute) and André Becker (71st) scored the goals in the 2-0 win in front of 26,117 spectators at the Bielefelder Alm and shot Arminia into the round of 16.
Union mistakes will be punished
Both goals were preceded by individual mistakes by Berlin. Union coach Bo Svensson also saw it that way. “We make a bad pass and Bielefeld makes good use of it“he said in the Sportschau interview: “Those were individual mistakes. That’s just football.”
His Bielefeld colleague Michél Kniat didn’t care. “It was a good game for us, so I’m proud of the team”he said: “The game went perfectly. That was at Bundesliga level.”

The Bielefeld team benefited from a major blunder in the “Iron’s” build-up game when they scored the opening goal. András Schäfer played a pass from his goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow right into Wörl’s foot. He didn’t hesitate for long, shot from 35 meters and the ball sailed over the rushing Rönnow into the goal.
After that, the Berliners were off their game for a short time. Just three minutes later, the Arminen almost made it 2-0 and Union helped again. After an involuntary assist from Kevin Vogt, Louis Oppie appeared completely free in front of Rönnow, but the goalkeeper parried the shot with a strong reflex.
Berlin hits aluminum twice
In the 28th minute Berlin almost equalized. The ball landed at Rani Khedira, who took the ball perfectly 13 meters in front of the Bielefeld goal and immediately shot powerfully with his right. But the end only hit the crossbar.
And Arminia was also lucky shortly before the break. Berlin’s Schäfer maneuvered the ball onto the post after a free kick and Danilho Doekhi failed with the follow-up shot past goalkeeper Jonas Kersken.
All in all, the Bielefeld team, coach Kniat’s team, delivered a very good first half and defended very disciplined. Union coach Svensson, on the other hand, saw a very weak performance from his team.
Union puts pressure on, Arminia scores
That changed in the second half. From the start, the Bundesliga team took control and put constant pressure on the Arminia goal.
After about an hour we almost equalized, but Laszlo Bénes’ shot was deflected and went just wide of the goal.
In the middle of this Berlin pressure phase, Arminia hit. This time Diogo Leite lost the ball in the build-up game against Wörl – and then things happened very quickly. After a one-two with Maël Corboz, Wörl played the ball across to the free Becker and he didn’t miss the chance to make it 2-0 – the decision.
