Shanahan Provides Information About McCaffrey and His Possible Return to Practice

Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, spoke to the press this Monday to present his report of injured players during the game that the 49ers won against the Cowboys. In addition, Shanahan also told the media how the recovery process is going for other players that the team has on the injured list, specifically running back Christian McCaffrey.

Injury Report

“Last night’s injuries: Jordan Mason, he aggravated the same shoulder, we’ll evaluate him here after the bye week. Dee Winters is in concussion protocol. Deebo Samuel Sr. had a rib and oblique strain “We will evaluate him after the break. Renardo Green, sprained ankle, will simply be day to day. Chris Conley, hamstring, will be week to week,” Shanahan reported.

In addition, the 49ers coach said he hopes to recover injured receiver Jauan Jennings after the bye week. Jennings has missed the most recent two games with a hip problem.

McCaffrey’s progress

The 49ers star running back has not been able to play this season due to his Achilles tendinitis problem. This Monday, Shanahan reported whether or not McCaffrey has a chance to recover and play in the next game, which will be against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the team’s break.

“It depends on how he does this week. He hasn’t had any setbacks, so it looks like we’re on the right track. But he’ll train harder this week while we’re gone and more or less simulate some training for himself. As long as everything goes well “Hopefully we can have him back in practice next week,” Shanahan explained.

The coach also talked about what this process has been like for McCaffrey, trying to stop him from getting desperate and trying too hard at the beginning of his recovery.

“I think it was tough at the beginning when we did him in training camp and then we felt like he was going to be ready for Week 1. And then after we decided to put him on IR (injured reserve) English), I think it has been very easy. That’s why we decided to do that because we knew it would take at least a month and we have had him resting for a long time and now we have taken it slowly and things have been going well. Now it would be good to get him back, Hopefully,” Shanahan said.

Since the team rests this weekend, Shanahan said the 49ers will practice next Monday, so, according to the coach, if McCaffrey does well this week with his individual drills, perhaps they can open the training window for him that Monday of next week.

Expectations with McCaffrey

The press asked Shanahan if when McCaffrey returned we could see him play immediately with the same intensity as always and without any limitations. The coach indicated that caution must be taken and it all depends on what they observe.

“No, the expectation is just to see how it is when it comes back and then evaluate it as it goes along. Of course, the hope is that everything will just go back to normal and be perfect, that’s what we’re all looking for. But you have to handle this intelligently and you have to evaluate it every day. What we see with our own eyes, what he tells us, that is something we are constantly working on,” Shanahan concluded.
