Seven wins in a row! DTB talent Marko Topo on fire

Marko Topo is considered one of the players in the German Tennis Association who are believed to be able to make the leap into the world’s top ranks. After a steep rise in his first years on the tour, the 21-year-old’s career has recently stagnated. However, number 453 in the world rankings currently suggests that it could finally be time for the next step.

At the end of March, Marko Topo celebrated his third tournament victory at an ITF event at the M25 tournament in Tarragona. The German then tried his luck at larger events, but reaching the quarter-finals at the Challenger in Zug (Switzerland) was the highest of feelings. Towards the end of the tennis year, Topo gets going again.

Last week the DTB youngster won the M25 tournament in Heraklion (M25), and Topo is currently continuing his successful streak at the same place.

On Thursday, Topo defeated Spaniard Mario Gonzalez Fernandez (number 594 in the world rankings) 6:4 and 6:3, celebrated his seventh win in a row and moved into the quarterfinals. However, Topo made an impression especially in the first round, when he knocked out the second-seeded Frenchman Gabriel Debru (number 264 in the world rankings) from the tournament.

Vogt is also still in the race

By the way: Topo has never won seven games in a row outside of the youth tour. A clear sign that Topo has taken a step forward.

In the round of the last eight, Topo will now face the winner of the game between Sergey Fomin from Uzbekistan and Britain’s Ryan Peniston.

At the women’s event in Heraklion (W15), 19-year-old Marie Vogt also reached the quarterfinals on Thursday. Vogt (number 633 in the world rankings) defeated the Romanian Binaca Barbulescu 6:2 and 7:5. Eva-Maria Voracek (number 892 in the world rankings) is also hopeful of progressing.
