CFL | Jason Maas is a finalist for Coach of the Year

(Toronto) Jason Maas has been named a finalist for the Canadian Football League‘s Most Outstanding Head Coach award, the Ambrosie Circuit announced Thursday morning.

The head coach of the Montreal Alouettes will face that of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Corey Mace for the prestigious award.

In his second year at the helm of the team, Maas guided the Alouettes to their first regular season East Division title since 2012, as well as their first 12-win campaign since 2010. The Montrealers led the CFL for pass completion percentage (71.3), offensive touchdowns conceded (31) and average yards conceded per play (6.32).

Two other Birds players are also finalists for the gala which will take place on November 14 in Vancouver, on the sidelines of the Gray Cup game.

Tyrice Beverette will try to win the CFL Defensive Player of the Year title against Riders player Rolan Milligan Jr.

Beverette finished first in the CFL in defensive plays with 137, including 102 tackles – his first season with at least 100 tackles – a total good for fourth in the league. He also tied for second in the league in tackles for losses with eight, finishing behind teammate Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund.

Moreover, Adeyemi-Berglund will face Winnipeg Blue Bombers player Brady Oliveira for the title of Canadian player par excellence.

Oliviera is also a finalist for league MVP against Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell.

The Blue Bombers running back is the West Division nominee for the George Reed MVP award for a second straight season, while Mitchell will attempt to become the fourth player in CFL history to win the the most coveted individual honor on the circuit for a third time.

The awards ceremony will honor the season’s best in seven categories. These will be elected by members of the Football Writers’ Association of Canada (ACFC) and by CFL head coaches. The Jake Gaudaur Veterans Trophy and the Tom Pate Award will be presented at the same time.

The Gray Cup game will take place on November 17 at B. C. Place in Vancouver.
