The second match day starts this weekend for the two highest divisions in Austrian badminton sport. A top duel is coming up in the 2nd Bundesliga – second-placed ASKÖ Kelag Kärnten is hosting the current league leaders ATSE Graz in front of their home crowd. This time the Klagenfurt team want to take revenge for two defeats last season.
In the second Sunday match, VRC Badminton welcomes BC Smash Graz in the Kagran sports hall. The Viennese were unable to exploit their potential in the first round and now want to live up to their expectations against strong Graz players.
The first game of this second round will take place on Saturday in Mollardgasse – the WBH Vienna welcomes league newcomers St. Pölten. The Viennese go into the encounter as the clear favorites, but should not underestimate the newcomer.
Statements from the clubs:
WBH Vienna (Lukas Weißenbäck):
We continue in a home game against league newcomers St. Pölten. It is clear to us that we will go into this match as favorites. Nevertheless, we are warned not to take the games lightly – a lot can happen in sport. But as long as we give our 100%, nothing should stand in the way of success.
BC St Pölten (Michael Hofmann):
A very strong opponent awaits us on Saturday away at WBH Vienna. Of course, we are aware that we are clearly underdogs in this encounter. Nevertheless, we arrive with full motivation. In the first round we ended up lacking a bit of luck to get more points from the encounter against Carinthia. This time we have set our goal a little lower and would like to take at least one point from Vienna. We are currently slightly depleted due to illness, which is why we don’t yet know whether the entire squad is available to us. However, the team spirit is excellent and we are looking forward to the second round of this season.
ASKÖ Kelag Carinthia (Denise Hofer and Laura Hasenbichler):
This Sunday we start the second game of the season in our home hall full of anticipation. After we won our first game convincingly 6-2 against BC St. Pölten, our first tough test now comes against the league leaders ATSE Graz. Last year we were able to defend ourselves strongly against them, but were beaten by the Styrians both times. Since everyone worked hard in training, we’re hoping for revenge this year. We are highly motivated and feel up to this very big task in front of the home audience!
ATSE Graz (Nina Almer):
On Sunday we have an away game against ASKÖ Kelag Kärnten. We are aware that the Carinthians have strengthened themselves with another legionnaire and that the challenge is greater than last season. Despite our confidence, we will by no means underestimate the young team from Carinthia. Our goal is to take the momentum from the victory in the first encounter and perform with full energy. We want to give everything we can to take home as many points as possible and put in a strong performance on Sunday.
BC Smash Graz (Rüdiger Rudolf):
After the home win in the first round, we now start four away games in a row. The trip to the VRC in Vienna begins. VRC hasn’t shown its true colors in the first round, so we expect an even game. The goal would be a narrow win again, but we can live with a 4:4, especially since the team will be different in some places.
