The European Union (EU) has launched an investigation into violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA) against Chinese online shopping platform Temu.
The European Commission announced in a press release on the 31st that this investigation will evaluate Temu’s potential violations of the law in relation to its sale of illegal products, potential addiction, and recommendation algorithm methods.
The Commission previously sent an information request to Temu on the 11th asking it to explain what measures it had taken to prevent the sale of illegal products.
However, it was explained on the 31st that based on a preliminary analysis of the information request response and information submitted by third parties, it was determined that an official investigation was necessary.
Temu’s actions were judged to be insufficient.
Temu is expected to prepare a corrective plan to avoid fines during the investigation and submit it to the Enforcement Committee.
If found to be in violation of the law, fines of up to 6% of global annual sales may be imposed.
Temu is targeting the global market with various discount events and low-priced products, and it also attracted attention by running a television advertisement with the message ‘Shop like a billionaire’ during the Super Bowl, the final of the National Football League (NFL) last year.
