Mexico, Oct 31 (EFE).- Olympic medalists Prisca Awitti, in judo, Marco Verde, in boxing, and Osmar Olvera and Juan Celaya, in jumping, head the list of winners of the National Sports Award in Mexico in 2024.
The National Sports Commission announced the finalists in the non-professional category.
Awitti won the silver medal in the 63 kilogram division; Verde also won silver in the lightweight, while Olvera won bronze in the three-meter springboard and silver with Celaya in the synchronized jumps of that event.
In Paralympic sport, the Paris 2024 champions Juan Cervantes, in the 100 meter dash, T-54 division, and Gloria Zarza, monarch in shot put in the F-54 category, were chosen.
Charlyn Corral, top scorer in the Spanish league in 2018, was now chosen as the best professional athlete in Mexico, as a result of her good performance with the Pachuca club, with which she was the leading scorer in the Clausura 2024 tournament and with the national team.
Referee Katya Itzel García won the distinction as best judge and coach Radamés Hernández, who led Verde to the Olympic boxing final, was the distinguished coach, along with Martín Velasco and Iván Rodríguez, in the Paralympic category, in which They guided Cervantes and Zarza.
For their career, double jumping medalist Alejandra Orozco and Daniel Aceves, Olympic wrestling runner-up in Los Angeles 1984, were awarded the award.
The Harp Helú Foundation was recognized for its promotion of sports.
The winners will receive the equivalent of about $40,000 in Mexican pesos, as long as they are not professionals.
The country’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, will present the awards in November.
