Corinthians failed to win on Thursday night when they visited Racing Club: 2-1. The Brazilian club took an early lead thanks to a goal from Yuri Alberto, but two goals from Juan Quintero determined the final score in Argentina’s favor before half time.
At Corinthians, former PSV players André Ramalho and Memphis Depay kicked off in Avellaneda. The 98-time international of the Dutch national team ultimately played 79 minutes.
Corinthians took the lead in the sixth minute. Memphis was played in by Yuri Alberto and gave the ball back to the Brazilian with a nice heel. From a difficult angle, Yuri Alberto managed to outwit goalkeeper Gabriel Arias: 0-1.
Quintero then took Racing Club by the hand. The Colombian, once praised as a child prodigy at FC Porto, was allowed to score from eleven meters after 36 minutes. Quintero shot his penalty hard and hit the middle: 1-1.
Three minutes later Quintero was allowed to cheer again. After a good header from striker Adrián Martínez, the left foot went alone to goalkeeper Hugo Souza. Quintero decisively pushed the ball past the Brazilian goalie: 2-1.
Quintero immediately scored the winning goal. This makes the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana the final destination for Corinthians, which can fully focus on the Brazilian competition.
It is important that Memphis and co quickly gain points in the Serie A Betano. Corinthians is now in fifteenth place, with only one point more than number seventeen RB Bragantino.
Corinthians will have to do everything they can not to end up in ‘Z-4’. ‘Z-4’ is the Brazilian name for the bottom four places, which ensure relegation. Corinthians still has seven league matches to play.
