Manita Shrestha Pradhan (Nepali Manita Shrestha Pradhan; * June 1, 1999 in Panchthar) is a Nepalese lightweight (up to 57 kg) judoka who represented her country at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Manita Shrestha Pradhan was five years old when she came into the care of the Prisoner’s Assistance Mission (PAM), an organization that provides shelter and care to children of prison inmates. She grew up in the mission, went to school and started judo training there, motivated by her supervisor.[[1]
Her first judo tournament was the Triyog Judo Championship in Kathmandu in 2011, where she won a gold medal.[[2] She then took part in the Judo World Championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019, where she was eliminated in the first round. She also competed at the 2019 and 2023 Asian Games and the 2016 Asian Championships. In 2017, at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong, she became the first Nepalese judoka to win a bout at the Asian Championships.[[3] Two years later she achieved seventh place in the Judo World Cup “Asia Open Taipei”.
She celebrated great international success at the U21 Asian Championships in Bishkek in 2017 when she won the bronze medal. A year later she came fifth at the U21 Asian Championships. She previously took part in the Asian U18 Championships in 2014, 2015 and 2016. She reached seventh place in Hong Kong in 2014 and repeated this success in Bangkok in 2015. In 2016 she came third in Kochi, India.[[4]
She has been a sports scholarship holder of the Nepal Olympic Committee since 2022. Manita Shrestha Pradhan was able to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris via the IJF world rankings.[[5] This made her the sixth Nepalese judoka to compete in the Summer Olympics.[[6] At the opening of the games, Manita Shrestha Pradhan was the flag bearer. In the women’s judo competition up to 57 kg, she lost in her first round to the Serbian Marica Perišić with ippon,[[7] was eliminated and finished 17th at the games.
She is trained by Devu Thapa,[[8] lives in Kathmandu and is a member of the Nepalese police.[[9]
