Application for redesign submitted: Sustainable and climate-friendly ZOB

With a proposal to redesign the central bus station (ZOB), the SPD parliamentary group in the city of Lünen is sending a strong signal for climate protection and strengthening local public transport (ÖPNV). The plans include both functional and ecological improvements to the ZOB. The aim is to develop the area into a modern and environmentally friendly transport hub that meets the demands of growing public transport and at the same time increases the quality of life through more greenery and better climate adaptation.
The administration should be commissioned to develop a new concept for the ZOB that meets the increasing demands on public transport and makes it easier for all citizens, including people with mobility restrictions, to change between lines. A central concern is that the new plans will allow all lines to travel directly to the central bus station in the future, thus enabling uncomplicated and barrier-free use.
“With the planned redesign of the central bus station, we are responding to the urgent challenges of climate change and are concretely implementing the city of Lünen’s climate protection concept,” explains the environmental policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, Klaus Lamczick. “We are creating space for efficient public transport and relying on greening measures that improve the microclimate in the city center.”
Strengthening the urban climate and unsealing areas
In addition to improved traffic management, ecological conversion plays a central role in a new concept for the ZOB. By unsealing areas that are no longer needed, heat islands should be reduced and new green zones created. The plan is to provide greenery with shady trees and green facades that enable evaporation and cooling via leaf surfaces and thus sustainably improve the urban climate.
These measures also do justice to the development of a “sponge city” – a concept that specifically prepares for the challenges of heavy rain events and reduces the overload of the sewer system. “Especially in the summer months, the health importance of a green and cool environment becomes more and more obvious. The greening of the central bus station creates a double benefit: for the environment and for the well-being of the people in Lünen,” continues Klaus Lamczick.
