ROME – In Rome, Italy, the police are investigating a curious and tragic case. In a local supermarket, a woman bought artichoke soup to stave off hunger. But she had no idea that there was a deadly poisonous substance in the soup. The case is now being handled by the local prosecutor’s office.
The incident happened a month ago, but it was only now revealed to the public. The poisoned soup contained botulinum, a poisonous substance produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The lethal effect of this substance is almost immediate, and the infected person dies from paralysis of the respiratory muscles. An autopsy also confirmed death by this dangerous substance, informs the Italian I read.

Ready-made artichoke soup from the refrigerator almost became fatal for the poor woman’s daughter, who did not eat the soup, but tasted it. Her symptoms did not appear until a few days later than her mother, and she admitted that she tried to taste the contaminated soup from the supermarket. The cause of death of her mother, who could not be saved despite the efforts of rescuers, was thus confirmed.
The daughter had to be hospitalized and transferred to the intensive care unit. The police managed to withdraw the poisoned soups from sale, and an extensive investigation and checks of the entire production chain are currently underway, which should provide enough information for the police.
