RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian footballer Marcelo prematurely terminated his contract with Fluminense on Saturday. The thirty-six-year-old former defender of Real Madrid had an argument with coach Mano Menezes the day before.
The Brazilian club stated in its statement that the termination of the contract was by mutual agreement. “Our relations with Marcelo remain intact despite the early termination of cooperation. We reached this step by mutual agreement,” the club’s statement was conveyed by the AP agency.
Menezes was going to send on Marcelo in the closing minutes of the league match against Gremio, but in the end he decided to field John Kennedy. It seemed that the defender did not agree with this move of the coach. Fluminense were leading 2-1 at the time, but Gremio equalized from a free kick shortly before the final whistle at the Maracana Stadium.
“I wanted to put on Marcelo at the time, but I heard one thing that I didn’t like, so I changed my mind. Kennedy came on to keep things level. It was only two, three minutes to go.” said Menezes at the press conference.
Marcelo worked at Real from 2007-2022, winning the Champions League five times and La Liga six times with the Spanish club. From Madrid, he headed to Greek Olympiakos in September 2022, from where he moved to Fluminense in February 2023.
