<a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/01/nfl-end-of-season-review-individual-honors/" title="NFL End-of-Season Review: Individual Honors”>Baker Mayfield E Patrick Mahomes they might be rivals on the field now, but in reality they are leaving way back in college at Texas Tech. Yes, you read that right! Before tearing it up in the NFL, they were both Red Raiders. Baker, the Bucs quarterback, began his college career in 2013, a year before Mahomeseven though he was chosen a year after the two-time MVP.
Baker recently talked about his early days with Mahomes during an interview with Rich Eisen. He mentioned: “Yes. We are close. Pat is a good guy. It dates back to when I was still at Texas Tech hosting him on an official visit. Just getting to know the guy as a person and then when I left, you know watching from afar what he was able to do.” It’s nice to see their friendship It dates back to my college days.
Can you imagine 18-year-old Baker walking Mahomes around campus? Well, it happened. Baker hosted Mahomes during his visit to Texas Tech when Patrick was considering signing with the team.
Baker joked about their visit, saying, “Yes, a long time ago. Young Baker and young Pat. I was 18 years old. You know how official college visits go when you’re trying to make sure a guy has a good time. You take it to the library and take the exam. You’ve seen Kumbaya.” It’s pretty fun to imagine these two future NFL stars writing books together.
The unlikely bond between Baker and Patrick
Despite their friendship, Baker had to bear the brunt of it cross the Red River to play for Oklahomacenter Mahomes he remained with Texas Tech. But hey, it all worked out for both of us in the end. They also faced each other on the field a couple of times in college, with Baker coming out on top both times. Remember that crazy 66-59 game? Yes, both QBs threw for over 1,400 yards. It’s simply mind-blowing.
It’s clear Baker and Patrick have a lot of respect for each otherand it’s great to see them succeed in the NFL after their college days together. As Baker said, “It was in college that we first met as people and as athletes.” It’s really cool to see how their paths crossed from college to the pros.
So, the next time you see Baker and Patrick face off on the field, just remember that their bond goes far beyond their NFL careers. They are two guys who go back to college and have a lot of mutual respect for each other.
