Although he ended his active MMA career fourteen years ago with a relatively decent record of 11-5, a much bigger shock came now. The 48-year-old former fighter Andre Mussi, who gained a large amount of muscle mass in recent years, died unexpectedly. He is reported to have died after collapsing in the gym.

Mussi fought at home in Brazil, where he thrived. At the end of his career in 2010, he scored two triumphs in a row and proved that he really had a hard time looking for heavyweight competition in his homeland. He also wrestled in the United States, Mexico and around Europe before deciding to retire in 2010.

Reports from Brazil, which The Sun also worked with, say that Mussi tragically died after collapsing in the gym and was unable to recover until he was taken to hospital.

The tragic death understandably flooded social networks, friend and star fighter in Brazilian jiu-jitsu Renato Velame praised what his partner did for the world of MMA. “Andre will be remembered as one of the key figures who helped put MMA on the national and international map. He was part of modern MMA and reformed the business model and helped professionalize the sport,” he wrote on social media. The server globo.com also wrote about the death.

Foreign servers also report that Mussi stayed fit even after his career ended and maintained his fitness by focusing on bodybuilding and business investments. Just from his last pictures, it was easy to conclude that he really devoted himself a lot to strengthening. Although he fought in heavyweight, he subsequently added additional kilograms of muscle mass.

Mussi is also known for starting a gym called Rush Academy for MMA stars, which helped bring in fighters like Yuri Carlton and Edilberto Crocota. “In the past, it was difficult to open a gym that was dedicated only to martial arts. We created a strong MMA team there. Many people trained there. It was a place where this generation of fighters went to train,” writes the 41-year-old Velame, who has an MMA background over 30 duels.

According to reports from Brazil, Mussi left behind a wife, Natalia, and a son, Joaquim, with his family based in Rio de Janeiro. The cause of death has not been officially revealed.
