Jos Verstappen said in an interview with Viaplay looks back on an exciting and controversial weekend in Mexico. Both Max Verstappen and the race management provided a lot of food for discussion. Jos Verstappen admits that he believes his son was not released, but also criticizes the role of the FIA in the whole story.
Commentator Nelson Valkenburg asked Verstappen in São Paulo about all the fuss about community service, the use of swear words, and the hard battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. The former Formula 1 driver mainly pointed to a lack of consistency among race management. ‘It also depends on the penalties. Sometimes they give five seconds, and other times ten seconds. There also has to be a line, so that you know what punishment you will get,” says dad Verstappen.
Verstappen emphasizes that he thinks it is right that the world champion was punished, although he has doubts about the severity of the punishment. ‘Look, that second moment (in Mexico, ed.), I thought he went too far. He now thinks so too, I believe,” Verstappen senior shares. ‘I tell him honestly too, and that’s all fine. I think you should always communicate openly and honestly with each other.’
Herbert causes controversy
Johnny Herbert has been almost always present at the race management lately, and catches up between races by spouting his bile at online casinos. Max Verstappen already indicated that he found Herbert’s statements quite extreme, and Jos Verstappen thinks so too. ‘A steward should not talk to the press at all, and just constantly do his job. That is certainly not the case now,” he said, expressing his doubts about the role of the driver who shared the circuit with Jos Verstappen in the past.

Verstappen also discussed the title situation, indicating that he does not enjoy the fact that Verstappen has to win the title like this. ‘I prefer to see it differently. The fact is, it’s hard now. The team doesn’t know how to get the performance have to get out of the car. It is also nice to see that every point counts. Max always has to be there, and he is good at that.’ He doesn’t want to say much about McLaren. “I’m all about Max, and I hope he comes out on top in the end.”
