It was in connection with Dahlén scoring a goal for Timrå that he was tackled by Björninen and left lying on the ice.
Dahlén, who was injured earlier in the season, had to be led off the ice at the same time as the referees video-reviewed Björninen’s hit.
May be fined SEK 26,200
After a few minutes, head referee Richard Magnusson announced that Örebro’s Finnish center had been awarded a match penalty for a tackle to the head.
Björninen was then reported to the disciplinary board, which on Sunday morning made its decision. They sentence Björninen to a four-game suspension, and a fine of SEK 26,200.
“Great risk of injury”
In its judgment, the Disciplinary Committee lists three reasons for the decision:
- It is a late tackle on a player in a defenseless position.
- Tackling takes place from the so-called “blind side”.
- The tackle entails a high risk of injury.
Timrå won the match
Björninen told the disciplinary committee that he did not intend to injure Dahlén, but rather tried to protect himself in the collision.
“At the time of the collision, the Timrå player has a forward-leaning position after his shot, which gives an unfortunate result at the time of the collision,” he explained.
No word yet on how seriously Dahlén is injured. Timrå won the match 3–2.
