Union Berlin coach Bo Svensson made changes to his defensive line for the game at FC Bayern Munich (0:3): Tom Rothe moved to the bench, while Diogo Leite took his position on the left rail. However, this change should not be a long-term solution.
“That was for this game,” explained Svensson, referring to the quality of the opponent. “Olise played on the right and we just wanted to have a very dynamic player defensively against him.” Berlin’s head coach had already indicated in the past few weeks that Rothe – for all his offensive strength – still had to improve in his work against the ball. On Saturday all he had left was the bench.
It wasn’t the first time this season that Leite moved to the left. His place in central defense was taken over by Leopold Querfeld, who had impressed himself in training and had a “top mentality”. “He deserves it and will be a very important player for Union Berlin in the future.”
In the short term, however, it is likely that Rothe will return to the starting lineup next matchday, meaning Querfeld will have to go back to the bench. The Iron Men will play at home against SC Freiburg on Friday (8:30 p.m.).
