O Benfica B met Académico de Viseu this Sunday, November 3, at the Estádio Municipal do Fontelo, in a match for the 10th round of League 2. The game ended in a 1-1 draw (1-1).
In a duel designed as being of a “high degree of difficulty”, coach Nélson Veríssimo guaranteed that the Reds would play “eye to eye” against the opponent, to “give a response to Benfica”.
For the match, compared to the meeting with the Tondela (from the 9th round), the coach only promoted a change in the starting elevenclimbing Leandro Santos replacing Francisco Domingues. Thus, the eagles entered the game with André Gomes, Leandro Santos, Joshua Wynder, Gustavo Marques, Diogo Spencer, Diogo Prioste, Nuno Félix, Hugo Félix, João Rego, Gerson Sousa and Gustavo Varela.
The first ten minutes were dominated by the Reds, coming out in construction and with more possession of the ball, but without approaching the goal. From here onwards, Académico de Viseu became more offensive and forced André Gomes to show his work.
At 11′ and 13′, the Benfica B goalkeeper opposed Gautier. In the first move, the goalkeeper made an incomplete save, then stopped the ball; in the second moment, André Gomes grabbed the ball directly from a free kick.
Working well defensively, those led by Nélson Veríssimo showed themselves, once again, in good shape against the 14′. Michelis headed the ball and André Gomes touched the ball with his armletting her escape. Before it reached the opponent, Hugo Félix controlled, removing the danger.
Six minutes passed from the threat to the goal (20′). After a corner taken by Gautier, Gustavo Varela cleared the ball with a header, but the ball reached the feet of Yuri Araújo, who shot to make it 1-0.
The game was close, with both teams attacking and trying to hit the opposing nets. To the 22′Hugo Félix hit a free kick and João Rego deflected the ball, clearing the home team’s goal. Three minutes later (25′), Gustavo Varela was stopped, in the area, by goalkeeper Gril. After intervention of VAR and consultation of images, the Referee Luís Filipe reversed the decision to award a penalty in favor of Benfica B and the yellow card shown to the Académico de Viseu goalkeeper.
On yet another occasion, André Gomes made a very important save from Miguel Bandarra’s header (32′). The result, of 1-0, did not change until interval.
In the second half it was about going in and… scoring! From a corner taken by Hugo Félix, João Rego headed home the equalizing goal at the Estádio Municipal do Fontelo! It was done 1-1to the 46′. Before, Diogo Prioste forced Gril to stretch out in a tight defense.
More pressing, and dominating the first moments of the complementary stage, the Benfica B accumulated several successive opportunities to take the lead. At 51′, Leandro Santos kicked, for Gril to clear. In the remainder, Gustavo Varela still ran to meet the ball, but was unable to prevent it from leaving the baseline.
No minute 62, Gautier isolated himself and, face to face with André Gomessaw the goalkeeper deny him the attempt. Great reading and speed from the red guardian!
In a more balanced tone, and lower intensitythe flagrant occasions that the teams had were few and far between. To the 78′, Leandro Santos crossed for Gustavo Varela to head, but the forward didn’t touch the ball.
Already in compensation time, at 90’+5′, André Gomes – elected Man of the Match – did one again great defensethis time from a shot by Soriano Mané. Thus, the match ended in a 1-1 draw (1-1).
At the meeting of Day 11 of League 2, scheduled for the 3:30pm on Sunday, November 10Benfica B receives the Alverca no Field no. 1 on the Benfica Campus.
DECLARATIONS
Nélson Veríssimo (Benfica B coach): “A game with two distinct halves. In the first half we started well in the first 20 minutes, but Académico de Viseu started to dominate with time. Our team was not at that stage, with time we stopped being us. At half-time we appealed to this circumstance. Losing, that we were losing with our identity, football against a great team, with good players. What satisfies me is looking at this team and seeing that the players look at the collective goals, that’s something I remember.”
Nuno Félix (Benfica B midfielder): “In the first half we were not at our level. We were unable to settle our game. The coach rectified some things during the break and in the second half we started well. Highlight the fans who supported us throughout the game, regardless of the result. We changed our way of playing We started playing at halftime, we started to build in three. We created some spaces and combinations inside.
