Edo Bosch’s life as Sporting’s coach has not been easy, after taking over as coach of the team this season. After the defeat in the Continental Cup final against Oliveirense, the lions are now left out of the Champions League, so they will not defend the European title. Sporting ended up finishing second in Group 3 of the qualifying phase, behind OC Barcelos – they were only ahead -, after their defeat this Sunday in France against the Minho side by 3-2.
The Alvalade team is now relegated to the WSE Cup, while OC Barcelos joins Benfica, Oliveirense and FC Porto, who qualified directly, and Valongo, who qualified by winning Qualifying Group 3.
In summary, Portugal will have five teams in the group stage of the Champions League and distributed as follows (1st round of the group stage to be on December 21st):
GROUP A – OC Barcelos, Reus, FC Porto, Noia, Barcelona and Saint-Omer
GROUP B – Valongo, Benfica, Trissino, Oliveirense and Liceo
The round of 16 of the WSE Cup (1st leg on 30/Nov and 2nd leg on 14/Dec) were organized as follows in terms of the Portuguese teams:
