Zverev Claims Seventh Masters Title in Paris: A Historic 66 Match Wins Surpassing Sinner

ATP PARIS – Alexander Zverev (27) twice swept home Ugo Humbert (26) 6:2 in the final of the indoor 1000 in Paris, and with his 66th win this year, he overcame the previous leader Jannik Sinner. Overall, the German tennis player won his 23rd title, the seventh of which was at the Masters event.

Zverev – Humbert 6:2, 6:2

In Paris, Roland Garros finalist Alexander Zverev beat Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune, who deprived him of their last hope of qualifying for the Tournament of Champions, into the final for the first time since July’s Hamburg and ended his wait for a second triumph this year. He swept home Ugo Humbert 6:2, 6:2 and followed up on his May victory at the clay Masters in Rome.

The 27-year-old German finalist from 2020 dominated the final duel in 76 minutes. He was supreme with his serve, lost only five fifteens and did not offer the opponent a single chance for a break point.

“I have to admit that it was a pretty good match. But I knew that if I was going to succeed, I had to play like this. Ugo is an incredible tennis player and he played at home in Paris. I think he played even better here than in other tournaments and I realized , that if the fans get involved, it will be very difficult. I wanted to end it quickly, and I managed to do that.” commented Zverev.

Zverev won his 23rd title overall and became the first player born in 1990 or later to win seven Masters titles. He celebrated twice in Rome and Madrid, won once in Montreal and Cincinnati. The second German after Boris Becker (1993) triumphed in the Berca hall and also the last, as the tournament is moving from next season.

Zverev has already won 66 matches this year, surpassing the most successful Italian Jannik Sinner to date. He moves up to 2nd place in the world rankings ahead of Carlos Alcaraz and is ideally set for the peak of the season. From November 10, he will compete in the Tournament of Champions in Turin, which he won in 2018 and 2021.

“I’m second now, but I lose about three thousand points to the first Jannik (Sinner). You have to stay healthy and win grand slams if you want to be world number one. You can’t do it without grand slams and points from them.” The two-time Grand Slam finalist is aware.

Twenty-six-year-old Humbert, who sensationally eliminated former world number two Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16, played in the finals for the eighth time in his career and for the first time at the Masters event. After an initial streak of six wins, he failed for the second time, losing to Arthur Fils in Tokyo in September.

Humbert will end the season next week at the home indoor 250 in Métay, where he will defend last year’s triumph. His first opponent will be compatriot Hugo Gaston.
