>Pallacanestro Vicenza 2012 returns to victory – Civitus who scores in the last quarter and beats the very fast Capo d’Orlando 71-63. Once again the Berica defense was the protagonist, conceding only 22 points to the guests in the second half, with the 42-year-old Jasaitis leaving the match early due to a muscle problem and never returning to the court.
Wednesday 6 November at 8.30pm new midweek on the impervious pitch of Lumezzane, third in the standings, but fresh from a Sunday “marathon” with defeat on their own pitch against Rucker San Vendemiano after two extra times (94-96).
The race
Ucles opens the ball from the midfield, the red and whites immediately make a strong start, while the guests make a lot of mistakes in their shots, until Barattini unlocks them from outside. Ucles responds (10 points in 10 minutes) and Nwohuocha with power keeps Civitus ahead, even if Cecchinato just entered guesses from the table at the siren the minus 2. Orlandina starts with a 0-8 partial in two minutes of the second half, and there is an immediate time out for Ghirelli. Almansi closes the gap, but Cecchinato, Antonietti and Fresno from the arc bring the guests to +10. Ucles and Nwohuocha kept the Berici in the game from under the scoreboards, with the score at halftime ending at 36-41.
In the second half Ucles immediately went up to 20 points on the scoresheet with two baskets in a row and put Vicenza back ahead: a bitter point-to-point and low-scoring battle began. Almansi scores the +6 on the counterattack, then Cucchiaro commits the fourth foul and Galipò scores at 51 all. Things heat up on the pitch, in succession two technical fouls due to protests against Gatti and coach Bolignano allow Vicenza several laps on the line to close the third period ahead by 5 points.
The last quarter puts on a show: the Cucchiaro-Ucles axis makes it 66-55 with 5 to go, exploding the Dueville crowd, then it’s Gasparin at the end of 24 seconds who scores the +14 which allows them to bring home the third seasonal success.
Coach statements
Ghirelli: “Victory against a team that was in rhythm, very well trained, we managed to keep them to 63 points with another good defensive performance, in attack we are still going in spurts and we have to become more cynical, we need everyone, we have to be better at managing the race better. Now we will play in Lumezzane and we have to recover to go on a pitch that is difficult, against a very strong team and with a player who is dominating the championship like Amici”.
Bolignano: “I congratulate Vicenza, we didn’t have a good performance, we were too nervous, we struggled to keep our heads in the game, now we have to start again.”
