After retiring from the national soccer team, <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/02/dfb-soccer-players-an-instructive-journey-nd-aktuell-de/" title="DFB soccer players: An instructive journey (nd-aktuell.de)”>Alexandra Popp will continue her club career. The former captain of the German team, who said a tearful farewell to the DFB team last week in the game against Australia (1:2) after 145 appearances, will remain at VfL Wolfsburg. Popp has extended her contract with the seven-time champions until June 30, 2026.
“It’s no secret that I feel very comfortable at VfL Wolfsburg and am grateful for the trust over many years,” said the Wolves’ co-captain and record player: “I really enjoy working with the team and the coaching team . A lot of detail is being worked on and I believe that there is still a lot of quality to be achieved. Furthermore, there is a concept and ideas to further professionalize VfL in order to stay ahead at national and international level.”
Popp moved from FCR Duisburg to Wolfsburg in 2012. With 13 cup wins, seven championships, three triumphs in the Champions League and the Olympic victory in 2016, Popp can boast an impressive collection of titles. The attacker was also voted “Footballer of the Year” three times, and on Monday she received the “Silver Laurel Leaf” for the second time, the highest award in German sport.
“With her qualities as an absolute leader on and off the pitch as well as with her mentality, she is a role model for young players and an important factor in our squad planning for the next season,” said Wolfsburg’s sports director Ralf Kellermann: “In addition, Poppi is an established brand She has long been a perfect ambassador for VfL Wolfsburg in German competitive sport.”
