Understanding Coaching Changes: Svědík on Strengthening Connections with Eastern Football Cultures

The comparison with the world has a good read. For example, in the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga or Italian Serie A, there was only one change during the current season. On the contrary, for example, there have already been nine coaching rotations in Serbia, even fourteen in Bulgaria, i.e. including several temporary solutions.

The Czech Republic is sort of in the middle. Jiří Lerch was replaced in Budějovice by František Straka, David Holoubek in Mladá Boleslav by the Swedish coach Andreas Brännström. Jiří Saňák was replaced in Pardubice by David Střihavka, and after the end of Roman West, Slovácko is officially led by Jan Palinek, but Jan Baránek has the main say.

“Change is always unpleasant. It is influenced by many factors, people from the clubs, sometimes people outside it, the media. This is a big difference compared to previous years. Sometimes opinions that are purely secular are dealt with too much. Sometimes there is a lack of expertise,” said Svědík.

The opposite is Trpišovský, Svědík’s longtime friend. “I coached Pardubice while still in the division, Jindra was in Horní Měcholupy and Jarda Veselý led Letohrad. Even back then, we wore caps and it was already clear that Jindra would be an excellent coach,” Svědík said back to the period around 2012.

According to him, Trpišovský fulfilled his expectations in Slavia. “Being at a club like this for seven years and constantly moving at the top is exceptional. We can say that he has the best players, but that does not necessarily mean success. We keep seeing that the team can be set up to be successful in the league or European cups. They played and are playing fantastic matches in them,” mentioned the 50-year-old coach.

He also pointed out a circumstance that, in his eyes, helps Trpišovský in his work. “It’s important that new players keep coming to him, they rotate. He doesn’t work with the same staff all the time. Then you can upgrade and change the assembly. Of course, he knows the people in the club, the whole environment,” said Svědík.

“The players at the club are very happy and many of them are staying at the club. They are leaders. For example, Honza Bořil is incredible, after his injury he has a great desire to play. I’m sure he can be Jindra’s assistant one day. He has a tendency to coach and lead a team. That’s also why I think he’s a good captain,” stated Svědík.

So can Trpišovský become someone like Alex Ferguson, who spent twenty-seven years at Manchester United? “He can be in Slavia for twenty years,” agreed Svědík.

However, there is a gap after Trpišovský, Jaroslav Veselý took over as chief strategist of Bohemians in March 2022, a few months later Petr Rada took charge of Dukla, and Pavel Hapal joined Baník Ostrava during the fall.

What did Martin Svědík also talk about in Přímák? About the situation in Sparta, about Slovácko’s match with Pilsen and what he is doing now.
