Basketball Bundesliga team EWE Baskets Oldenburg has separated from its head coach Pedro Calles. The club announced this on Monday. The Lower Saxony team responded to the mixed start to the season with three wins and three defeats. His successor until the end of the season will be Mladen Drijencic, who had previously looked after the team. Drijencic, 59, had already trained Oldenburg from 2015 to spring 2022. After an interlude at medi Bayreuth, he returned to coaching in the Oldenburg youth team before the current season. “Our goal is and remains to not only keep the EWE Baskets in the top third of the table at the end of a main round, but also to have a say in the playoffs. In the long term, despite the start to the season so far, which has shown some good results, we see this goal at risk,” says Hermann Schüller, Oldenburg’s managing partner.
On Sunday, Oldenburg had lost in the league with 77:92 at Syntainics MBC before Calles had to leave. Under the 41-year-old Spaniard, who took over the club in the summer of 2022, the 2009 champions reached the play-off quarter-finals and the cup final in his first season. Last season, Oldenburg missed the playoffs and was eliminated in the cup round of 16. The Baskets also failed in the round of sixteen this season.
