No points in the NBA yet. But New York Knicks tie German rookie

Ariel Hukporti can prepare for further appearances in the NBA. According to the NBA, the New York Knicks want to give the Stralsund native a standard two-year contract.

The New York Knicks are probably planning long-term with German rookie Ariel Hukporti. As ESPN reported on Monday, the franchise and the Stralsund-born center agreed to a standard two-year contract. This means that the center, who has been used four times so far this season, was on the floor for an average of 7.2 minutes but has not yet scored any points, would not be a restricted free agent after the current season, but would instead be firmly tied to the Knicks.

Hukporti currently has a two-way contract, meaning he can play for the NBA franchise or in the G League for the Westchester Knicks farm team. The German with roots in Togo was drafted last (position 58) by the Dallas Mavericks at the end of June and was immediately traded to New York. Last season, Hukporti, who was under contract with Bundesliga club MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg from 2016 to 2020 and returned to the club in the spring, played in Australia for Melbourne United. Hukporti became the first player of Togolese descent to be drafted in the NBA.
