The Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) announced a special security device for the game between Sporting Clube de Portugal and Manchester City FC, to be held at the José Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon, this Tuesday, at 8pm. This match, which counts for the 4th round of the Champions League group stage, is classified as a high-risk event, as defined by national legislation, and an audience of approximately 35 thousand fans is expected.
The opening of the doors to the public is scheduled for 6pm, but the PSP will begin its operations on the ground early in the morning, with special attention to parking enforcement and traffic regulation in the vicinity of the stadium. With this early action, the PSP intends to guarantee orderly circulation and minimize inconvenience for residents and traders in the area around the José Alvalade stadium.
Expected traffic conditions
During the event period, traffic in the area around the stadium will be subject to specific restrictions. From 5:30 pm, Rua Professor Fernando da Fonseca will be temporarily closed for the movement of Manchester City fans, who will be escorted by the police from the Telheiras metro station to the stadium. At around 10pm, after the end of the match, the reverse route will be monitored again, with PSP guaranteeing the return of English fans to the same broadcaster.
Other traffic interruptions may occur on Avenida Padre Cruz, especially when teams arrive at the stadium. Drivers are advised to avoid this area during busy periods.
Reinforced police device and intervention areas
To guarantee security and public order, the PSP will deploy a police force tailored to the event, with the participation of various divisions and specialties. Units involved include the local Police Division, the Traffic Division, the Public Transportation Security Division, the Criminal Investigation Division, the Metropolitan Sports Information Unit, Rapid Intervention Teams and Prevention and Immediate Reaction Teams, in addition to the reinforcement of the Special Police Unit. According to the statement, the objective of the PSP is to ensure the protection of people and goods, both inside and outside the stadium, in addition to ensuring that the traffic restrictions necessary for the security operation have the least possible impact.
Prohibitions and crimes related to the event
The PSP recalls that, according to current legislation, some actions constitute crimes at sporting events. Among the illegal acts are:
- The sale and distribution of false or irregular tickets;
- Damage to public transport, facilities and equipment for public use;
- Participation in clashes on the way to or from the stadium;

Recommendations for fans
To avoid embarrassment and ensure a smooth experience, PSP advises fans to go to the stadium by public transport and avoid bringing their own vehicles to the surrounding area. The PSP also suggests that fans arrive in advance, in order to facilitate the security controls that will be carried out at the entrances.
If you opt for your own transport, fans must park in authorized parking lots. The PSP also recommends avoiding taking backpacks and suitcases into the sports venue, in order to speed up inspection and minimize potential risks.
