How Alpine’s Strategic Move in Sao Paulo Could Unlock Tens of Millions in VC Earnings

In Formula 1, consistency is key and the teams from the second half of the starting field are well aware of this. Therefore, they fight hard for every point in the hope that it will be enough at the end of the year. However, even if you are behind all season and have trouble collecting points, there is no need to give up. The case of Alpin showed that even one lucky race can completely shake up the standings in the championship.

Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly surprised the entire world of Formula 1 when they won two podium trophies at once after a lackluster season full of suffering. The French team benefited from a well-timed red flag, but they didn’t get it quite for free. In the last laps, he had to fend off the attacks of George Russell, and he also had the dreaded Ferrari and McLaren teams behind him.

Finally, euphoric feelings prevailed in Alpine. However, it is not just a great sporting success. The 33 championship points obtained also represent an intervention in the jackpot winning numbers. Alpina’s estimated revenues shot up by tens of millions of dollars within a few hours.

How much will Alpine improve?

Although the queen of motorsport does not disclose what specific amounts the teams will receive based on their position in the championship, based on behind-the-scenes information about the Concorde agreement, it is possible to determine relatively precisely how much each stable will earn.

However, everything depends on the total amount of money collected by Formula 1 from its commercial rights. About half of this money belongs to the teams, which, for example, amounted to $1.16 billion in 2022.

Of that, five percent goes into Ferrari’s pocket for its historical merits, and part of the money goes directly to the teams that have dominated the championship in recent years. For the purposes of prize money for the past year, approximately 75% of the total volume determined by the team will remain.

Given that the 2024 season will be a record length and the unit is doing well from a business point of view, it can be assumed that after deducting special levies, an amount of around 1.1 billion dollars will be distributed. It will be redistributed as follows:

Location Share (%) Result ($ million)

1st place 14,154

2nd place 13.1 144.2

3rd place 12.2 134.4

4th place 11.3 124.6

5th place 10.4 114.8

6th place 9.6 105.1

7th place 8.7 95.3

8th place 7.8 85.5

9th place 6.9 75.7

10th place 6 65.9

TOTAL 100% $1100m

Alpine just jumped from ninth place to sixth. If he can hold off Haas and the Racing Bulls, he’ll improve by $30 million and make for a very generous Christmas.

Team leader Oliver Oakeswho took the helm just a few weeks ago, says Fr “mega success”. “We were a bit frustrated that we didn’t make it to Q3 with both cars, but now they more than made up for it. This is a great team and always has been,” praised the stable of Enstone.

Still only 36 years old, the Briton feels that the Brazilian result can serve Alpina as a springboard. “This team has had a difficult start to the season and has not been in their skin for the last 12-18 months. But I can honestly say that since I arrived he has been strong and I can see the team spirit in him. A good winter awaits us. This is what we needed to get going.”
