Legendary Jordan jersey auctioned for historic sum

An original Michael Jordan worn Bulls jersey from the 1996/97 season sold for a historic sum at a Sotheby’s auction. The jersey is one of the most expensive NBA collectibles of all time.

A worn Michael Jordan jersey from the 1996-97 Chicago Bulls season sold at auction at Sotheby’s for $4.68 million. The red jersey, which Jordan wore in at least 17 games – including the famous game in which rookie Allen Iverson impressively outplayed Michael Jordan with a crossover – is the fourth most expensive NBA jersey in history. Only Jordan’s “Last Dance” jersey for $10.1 million, a signed Kobe Bryant jersey from his 2007-08 MVP season for $5.8 million and Wilt Chamberlain’s jersey from the 1972 NBA Finals have achieved even higher prices $4.9 million.

The auctioned jersey is the only red Jordan jersey that has authentication for Bulls star MeiGray’s first five championship seasons. According to Sotheby’s, the jersey has always been privately owned since it was sold directly by the team.

The jersey was one of five collectibles in the “Colossal | The Ultimate Jordan Collection” auction. Other highlights included a worn and signed jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 playoffs ($840,000) and a “Dream Team” signed U.S. flag from the 1992 Olympics ($1.8 million). The flag Jordan carried at the gold medal ceremony sparked a bidding war with 45 bids. In total, the auction brought in $8.5 million.
