Ludhiana: 54 year old athlete Varinder Singh from Jalandhar died tragically while participating in Kheda Watan Punjab Diyaan Season 3 at Guru Nanak Stadium. A video of this incident has also surfaced. Varinder was talking to his friend on the phone when he suddenly suffered a heart attack and fainted while keeping his phone in his pocket. Despite immediate help from nearby athletes, he could not be saved.
The competition started on Monday and is being held in five districts of Punjab including Ludhiana. This includes events like athletics, baseball, kickboxing and lawn tennis, in which young and experienced athletes are taking part. The competition will run till November 9 and is being held at Guru Nanak Stadium, Multipurpose Hall, Government Girls School Gill and Harvest Lawn Tennis Academy in Jassowal.
Varinder, who came to Ludhiana from Jalandhar, took part in the long jump competition. According to coach Bikramjit Singh, Varinder was on the field when he suffered a heart attack. He completed his event by 3 pm and watched other athletes compete. Around 5:30 pm, he suddenly became unconscious due to a heart attack. Athlete coach Sanjeev Sharma, who was present on the field at the time, said that Varinder died instantly while watching other participants. A medical team was nearby and he was quickly taken to the hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
