The CFP will feature a 12-team playoff for the first time, replacing the four-team format used since 2014. The expanded playoffs will culminate in the national championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on January 20.

The committee will select a bracket consisting of the five conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked teams.

In the final release of the rankings that will determine playoff matchups, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeds No. 1 through No. 4 and earn first-round byes. If a team is not a conference champion, but is seeded in the top four, it will be seeded No. 5. The fifth conference champion will be placed where it is seeded or as a seed. series n°12 if he is not ranked among the first 12.

Ohio State took second place in the rankings, ahead of Georgia. The Buckeyes remain in contention for the Big Ten title, with their only loss so far coming by one point to Oregon last month. Likewise, Georgia looks to remain in control of the SEC, with its only loss coming in a thriller against Alabama.

If BYU remains undefeated in the Big 12, it finds itself five places behind Miami. CFP committee chairman Warde Manuel said the Hurricanes’ “offensive exploits” explained the gap between the two undefeated teams, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.

Manuel also praised Indiana (9-0) for its dominant wins and explosive offense, but pointed to the Hoosiers’ schedule to explain their No. 8 ranking.

Boise State is in a great position to secure a playoff spot as the Group of Five champion. The Broncos (7-1) are in first place in the Mountain West Conference. Their only downside was a three-point loss to Oregon in September.
