RIYADH (Reuters) – The first round of the women’s tennis tour season, the WTA Finals, was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the 6th, with Zheng Qinwen (China), seeded seventh and playing in the tournament for the first time, advancing to the semi-finals.
Chung faced fourth-seeded Jasmine Paolini (Italy) and won overwhelmingly, 6-1, 6-1. At 22 years old, Zheng is the youngest player since Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) in 2011, and the second Chinese player to reach the top four after Li Na.
Chung, who made 12 service aces, commented, “This was one of the best performances of the year.The success rate of my first serve was really good.” His first serve point winning rate was 77%.
Aryna Sabalenka, a native of Belarus and guaranteed to be ranked number one in the world this year, lost to fifth seed Elena Rubakina of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-3, 1-6. In 2024, the only two opponents Sabalenka lost to were Lubakina and Iga Świętek (Poland).
Sabalenka was guaranteed to advance to the semi-finals after two matches.
