National football team: Musiala and Havertz back in the DFB squad, Stefan Ortega there for the first time

National coach Julian Nagelsmann is bringing Dortmund’s Julian Brandt and Felix Nmecha back into the national football team for the last two international matches of the year. The two BVB midfielders are back in the squad for the first time in exactly a year German Football Association (DFB). The only newcomer among the nominated players is Manchester City’s reserve goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno, who could make his debut in the DFB goal at the age of 32.

The national coach can also plan again with Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Benjamin Henrichs and Robin Koch, who were missing from the international matches in October in Bosnia-Herzegovina (2-1) and against the Netherlands (1-0) due to injuries.

Aleksandar Pavlović, who is out injured due to a broken collarbone, is not there. The injured Niclas Füllkrug, David Raum, Jamie Leweling and regular goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen are also not fit for the international matches.

Waldemar Anton and Leroy Sané are missing from the squad

The ailing Dortmund central defender Waldemar Anton was not nominated. Also Leroy Sané from FC Bayern, who loudly Nagelsmann “Needing more match practice and rhythm after his break” was not nominated. The 18-year-old Paul Wanner, whom Nagelsmann would have liked to have nominated, remains with the DFB U21 for the time being. The Heidenheimer has not yet decided whether he wants to play for Germany or Austria’s senior national team, for which he is eligible to play.

Thanks to the two victories, the national team had already made it into the quarter-finals of the Nations League. With another win against Bosnia-Herzegovina on November 16th or against Hungary on November 19th, Germany can secure group victory.

“After reaching the quarter-finals early, we want to win the group in the Nations League – if possible in front of our fans in the home game in Freiburg,” said the national coach. “Getting into the Final Four for the first time is an important interim goal for us next year on the way to the 2026 World Cup,” said Nagelsmann. “We have a strong squad, even if we have to make changes in some positions due to injuries.”
