Badminton continues to shine abroad – Sports Torch: Sports Guatemala

The Guatemalan badminton delegation shone at the Internacional Aguascalientes 2024, standing out with the gold medal in men’s doubles, in addition to adding five additional medals in various categories.

The event, held in the city of Aguascalientes, brought together the best exponents of the continent, and the Guatemalan athletes showed an outstanding level in each of their categories. Here we share the details of the medals won. What pride!

Guatemala medals at the Internacional Aguascalientes 2024

The national badminton team completed its participation in the XV Mexican International 2024, held at the Poliforum Deportivo y Cultural Universitario Morelos, from October 29 to November 3, 2024.

With athletes from America and Asia competing in the singles, doubles and mixed categories, both male and female, Guatemala stood out with its representatives: Jonathan Solís, Kevin Cordón, Yeison Del Cid, Diana Corleto, Nikté Sotomayor, Christopher Martínez, José Daniel Ochoa , Adriana Barrios, Fátima Gutiérrez, Antonio Ortiz, José Luis Granados and coach Rodolfo Ramírez.

Men’s doubles gold

The couple formed by Christopher Martínez and Jonathan Solís won gold in men’s doubles after an exciting final, beating the Americans Yu-Yuan Chang and Wang Yen Pang 2-1 with sets of 21-14, 15-21 and 8-21. In addition, José Luis Granados and Antonio Ortíz won bronze in this category, after losing in the semifinals to Chang and Pang.

More medals for Guatemala

  • silver medal in women’s singles for Nikté Sotomayor, who faced the Italian Gianna Stiglich in the final, falling 2-0 with partials of 21-19 and 21-17.
  • Silver in mixed doubles for Christopher Martínez and Diana Corleto, after a final against the Mexicans Luis Montoya and Miriam Rodríguez, who won 2-0 (21-16 and 21-11).

Also, Kevin Cordón won bronze in the men’s singles, marking his return to the courts after the injury in Paris 2024, consolidating an outstanding performance by Guatemala in the tournament.
