BarcelonaThe strong storm that hit the Empordà this morning has caused a new flood, now in Cadaqués. The rain has made the stream in this municipality grow, which has ended up dragging several vehicles that were parked there. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) has pointed out that the rains may have exceeded 100 liters per square meter.
In total, around thirty vehicles were affected that had parked in the creek even though the warning had been activated not to do so, as the mayor of the municipality, Pia Serinyana, told Catalunya Ràdio. The cars went down the flood until they hit the Casino bridge and blocked it. The water has also entered some premises that are close to the stream.
The Fire Department received the warning at 3:54 a.m. and dispatched two crews to Cadaqués. For two and a half hours they have been checking the vehicles and have found that there is no personal damage and that none of the cars had reached the sea. Now the priority is focused on removing the cars.
According to Serinyana, it was the heavy rain that fell on a mountain near the municipality that greatly increased the flow of the stream that passes through Cadaqués. The force of the water has dragged the vehicles that, by being blocked, have prevented the natural course of the water and this has generated the flood, the mayor explained.
From yellow alert to orange in a few hours
The downpours and storms that have fallen this night and morning throughout the Costa Brava have left real downpours and significant accumulations of water, but they are no longer related to the historic DANA that hit the Valencian Country last week and mid-Monday Catalonia That storm thinned out at the beginning of the week.
What happened this morning in the Empordà are the effects of a zone of instability with cold air at altitude which has caused irregular showers and sprinkles in various parts of the country in the last few hours. In the Empordà area tonight, there was a slight influx of moisture-laden sea winds towards the land which, when colliding with the cold air at altitude, have caused these patches of water. In some cases the downpours have been static and have remained for hours in the same area, accumulating a lot of water in a short time. This has been the main factor that has caused the streams to grow suddenly and that has caused incidents, as is the case in Cadaqués.
In this municipality, 100 l/m² have been exceeded, which has caused the streams to grow suddenly causing cars parked there to be swept away.
The Meteocat had activated the yellow warning in the area since yesterday for locally intense rain that could leave more than 20 l/m² in just half an hour, but the downpours have been much more abundant and violent than initially predicted. Shortly after four in the morning, Meteocat itself urgently activated the orange alert in the Alt Empordà due to accumulations of water that could exceed 100 l/m².
