RIYADH (Reuters) – The final women’s tennis tournament of the season, the WTA Finals, was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the 9th, with third-seeded Cori Gauff (USA) winning her first championship.
Gauff came from behind to beat Olympic gold medalist and seventh seed Zheng Qinwen of China 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. He led 6-0 in the final set tie-break, clinching the victory.
Gauff, 20, is the youngest woman to win the tournament since Russian Maria Sharapova in 2004. She is the first American to win the tournament since Serena Williams 10 years ago.
Gauff said, “It was a very good match. Kinwen played great tennis,” and “I did my best to hang on and didn’t give up until the end.” “I’ve been in a situation like this before, and I was able to turn it around. I was able to do the same today.”
