In a beautiful event, held at the Hernán Ramírez Villegas stadium in the city of Pereira, capital of the department of Risaralda, the First National and Paranational Youth Games of Colombia were inaugurated on the night of Saturday, November 9, 2024.
The opening of the contest, which runs until Thursday, November 28, 2024, was chaired by the Minister of Sports, Luz Cristina López Trejos. The national dignitary was accompanied by the governor of Risaralda, Juan Diego Patiño Ochoa; the mayor of Pereira, Mauricio Salazar Peláez; and the director of the games, Claudia Juliana Enciso Montes, among other civil and sports authorities, as well as personalities from the national, departmental and municipal level.
The Indeportes Antioquia reporter, Beatriz Elena Quiceno Gil, tells about the opening ceremony of the games: “With a massive and emotional celebration, the first National Youth Games of Colombia were inaugurated this Saturday, November 9, 2024.
After the national anthem, which marked the beginning of the ceremonial act with Antioquia as the first delegation to parade, the emotional moments of the night began.
There were 32 delegations that participated in the parade. The entire Colombian territory participating in these National Games that, in their first edition, integrate athletes from the Olympic and Paralympic sectors on the same date, with transportation, lodging and food expenses covered by the national government, seeking to guarantee conditions of equity for the participation of all departments.
After the welcome greeting from the mayor of Pereira, Mauricio Salazar Peláez, came the speech from the governor of Risaralda Juan Diego Patiño Ochoa, who took the opportunity to ask the national government to make the necessary efforts to not reduce the budget for sports, recreation and activity physics.

Prior to the inauguration, in the morning, in the afternoon and even at night, on Saturday, November 9, there were beach volleyball and wheelchair tennis competitions in Pereira, women’s basketball in Manizales and squash in Armenia.
The Antioquia delegation, which had presentations on Saturday in the three cities, in Manizales defeated Bogotá in women’s basketball, 60-47; in Armenia, in squash, Tomás Salinas and Miguel Posada won their games and in Pereira, in beach volleyball, they dominated Cundinamarca and Valle del Cauca in women’s and La Guajira in men’s.
This Sunday, November 10, sports increase and consequently the sporting presence of Antioquia as well, because apart from basketball, squash, wheelchair tennis and beach volleyball, there will also be competitions in baseball, cycling, karate do, paracycling, for archery, figure skating and floor volleyball.
The Antioquia delegation in the first National and Paranational Youth Games of Colombia is made up of 555 conventional athletes and 59 para-athletes, for a total of 614 athletes. Added to them are 131 coaches in conventional sports and twelve in para sports, plus 44 delegates in conventional disciplines and eight in para sports. The representatives of Antioquia will compete in 31 conventional sports and eight types of Paralympic sports.
