Bundesliga: Hoffenheim separates from coach Matarazzo

Bundesliga soccer team TSG 1899 Hoffenheim has parted ways with coach Pellegrino Matarazzo with immediate effect. The new sports director Andreas Schicker cited the poor points tally so far and “the lack of consistency in performance this season” as reasons for the separation.

Hoffenheim have only picked up nine points under Matarazzo this season and are currently only in 15th place in the table.

Christian Ilzer could take over as successor

“Unfortunately the time has come to go our separate ways,” said Matarazzo. “I will always look back on an instructive time that was characterized by various challenges and great moments of success.”

Christian Ilzer from Sturm Graz is considered a possible successor to Matarazzo. The 47-year-old recently led the club together with Andreas Schicker to win the championship and cup double and take part in the Champions League. For the time being, assistant coaches Frank Fröhling and Benjamin Hübner are leading the training.

Matarazzo started as a coach at the in February 2023 TSG Hoffenheim started, after 21 months it’s now over. Since current national coach Julian Nagelsmann left in 2019, no coach has been able to establish himself at TSG for longer than two years.
