He Premier12 world baseball tournament is red hot and this Monday is preparing a more than important day when the host Mexico faces Panama at the Pan American Stadium, a duel that could begin to define Group A in the tournament that brings together the 12 best teams in the ranking of the World Baseball and Softball Confederation.
Mexico and Panama They have experienced contrasting days during the first two games of the competition, but they hope to maintain the momentum in what could be a momentous clash as Premier12 Group A is reduced to a mini tournament of three games.
How do Mexico and Panama arrive at today’s match?
Mexico started the tournament slowly, being dominated in an eventual 8-4 loss to Venezuela, however, the engines started to beat Puerto Rico 7-5 on Sunday night.
For its part, Panama wasted a five-run lead to fall 8-9 in its first game of the tournament against the Netherlands. But luck smiled on them in a different way on Sunday when they managed to hold off Venezuela for a 4-2 victory that leaves them with an even record.
Along with Mexico and Panama, all the teams in Group A are tied in the standings with one game won and one lost with three challenges remaining in the group stage. The top two finishers advance to the Super Round in Japan.
Olympian Teddy Stankiewicz is Mexico’s designated starter for this third game in the Premier12. In addition to reaching the Triple-A level with the Red Sox and Reds in the minor leagues, he has three seasons of experience in Taiwan, where he won the 2020 season championship. This year he recorded a 4-2 record with a 3.53 ERA for the Toros de Tijuana and has not seen action in winter ball.

Wilfredo Pereira will be in charge of taking the mound for Panama. Barely 25 years old, Pereira has pitched in four editions of the Caribbean Series with his native country and this summer he alternated between Class A Advanced and Double-A for the St. Louis Cardinals, levels in which he went 6-2 with a 5.40 of effectiveness.
