Judo is more than a sport – it is a school of life. When we bow before stepping on the mat and greet our partner during training and competition with a greeting, we express our respect. This gesture shows that we treat our counterpart as a friend and treat him or her with trust. Courtesy is essential to practicing and developing safely and responsibly with each other in a sport based on mutual respect.
A polite attitude promotes a team spirit in training and creates an atmosphere in which everyone feels valued – whether young or old, experienced or beginner. In judo everyone is given equal respect. In this way, politeness becomes a force that not only promotes your own growth, but also that of others. Through support and respectful interaction, we can learn from each other and grow together.
Politeness in society and in everyday life
The value of politeness that judoka learn in the dojo also accompanies them outside of judo. It helps to treat each other attentively and respectfully in everyday life. A smile, holding a door or a simple “thank you” create a positive atmosphere and contribute to respectful interaction. These seemingly small actions can have a big impact as they strengthen a sense of community and contribute to harmonious coexistence.
Through the training, judoka learn the importance of politeness and respect and are encouraged to live these values in everyday life. As judoka, we are role models for correct and considerate behavior and can have a positive influence on those around us through our actions.
Courtesy is a fundamental principle in judo that promotes trust and respect. Bowing on the mat shows our training partners and opponents that we value and respect them. But this value doesn’t just stay in the dojo – it accompanies us in every area of our lives.
By adhering to the Judo value of politeness, we contribute to better coexistence and set an example of respectful and correct behavior – every day and everywhere.
