The BSG Wallhöfen/Ihlpohl was not able to take advantage of class leader TV Metjendorf II’s first mistake as originally hoped. Although the badminton national league team achieved an easy 6-2 win against the bottom team from Buchholz, they only managed a disappointing 4-4 draw in the previous game against Osnabrück.
BSG Wallhöfen/Ihlpohl –
BC 82 Osnabrück 4:4: Even though fifth place in the table was anything but windfall, the division of points didn’t really feel good afterwards: “In the end it’s more of a lost point,” said BSG coach Niko Lütjen, summing up the team’s emotional state. However, the Osnabrück team had left no stone unturned to achieve victory for their part. One player even came from Munich especially for the league game.
The BSG women’s doubles with Joana Tietjen and Jale Assmus started extremely confidently and scored the first point in two sets. Vin Assmus and Tebbe Monsees followed suit and made it 2-0 with a classy performance against technically skilled opponents. Who knows how the game would have gone if Jakob Puckhaber and Boji Wong had made it 3-0 in the second men’s doubles?
But the BSG duo had to admit defeat in the end after an exhausting marathon match with 27:29, 21:18 and 17:21. “If it’s 3-0 for us after this game, then that will do something to us. And to the opponent,” Niko Lütjen was sure. But it remained open – and contested.
“Monday batch” causes problems
Joana Tietjen then also suffered a three-set defeat in the women’s singles. Just like them, the BSG men also had problems with the balls that day – which, curiously, were provided by BSG Wallhöfen/Ihlpohl in this game. “We must have caught a Monday batch,” Niko Lütjen tried his hand at gallows humor. “Normally you wear out four to six balls in a normal game. Against Osnabrück it was twice as many in almost every game.”
After just a few rallies, the balls lost a lot of speed, and a short time later they often broke completely. “Of course that doesn’t help at all when it comes to developing a flow in the game,” explained Niko Lütjen. Nevertheless, Vin Assmus somehow fought his way to a narrow two-set victory. Jakob Puckhaber had no chance at 9:21, 10:21.
When the mixed doubles team with Tebbe Monsees and Jale Assmus made it 4:3 with a pretty confident two-set win, victory seemed within reach. Especially since Boji Wong actually knew his opponent Timo Brink and his weak points from previous duels and knew what to expect. But then the BSG newcomer’s game regularly alternated between strong and weak phases, with the big points in particular almost exclusively going to the Osnabrück player. “Boji perhaps wanted to force it too much and seemed a bit blocked as a result,” said Niko Lütjen. In the end, Wong had to concede 17:21, 16:21 – and the BSG victory was gone.
Blau-Weiß Buchholz – BSG Wallhöfen/Ihlpohl 2:6: The victory against the bottom team, who still had no points, was in principle already certain before the first rally. With Sebastian Eick, one of Buchholzer’s players was unavailable due to injury, so BSG started the game with a 2-0 win. The first men’s doubles with Assmus/Monsees then confidently scored the third point. It was also possible to get over the fact that the women’s doubles missed a match point and ultimately had to admit defeat in the set extension of the third round.
Jakob Puckhaber and the mixed doubles with Jale Assmus and Tebbe Monsees made Joana Tietjen’s clear two-set defeat in the women’s singles a side note. The final point was finally set by Boji Wong, who rewarded himself for a strong performance with his scores of 21:15, 13:21 and 21:10 and thus regained his self-confidence for the tasks ahead. Because on the next matchday there will be a duel against second-placed SG Maschen/Lüneburg (December 15th).
