The Berlin City Council officially submitted its application Tuesday for NFL games for five years, starting in 2025.
Berlin would become the third German city to host season games after Munich, which hosted its first game in 2022 and featured the Carolina Panthers’ 20-17 overtime win over the New York Giants on Sunday, and Frankfurt last year.
The games would take place at the Olympiastadion, where NFL preseason games were held during the 1990s and which has a capacity of 74,000 seats. This stadium was also the scene of the finals of the Men’s Soccer World Cup in 2006 and the Euro this year.
Berlin was not among the German cities candidate for hosting season games when the NFL first explored the possibility of scheduling international games in the European country. The three finalists in 2021 were Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf, which has still not presented a game.
NFL owners voted last December to allow the league to play eight international games per season. Five duels took place this season outside the United States, in London, Munich and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
A new destination has already been confirmed for next year. The Goodell circuit will go to Spain for the first match in its history in Madrid, the capital of the country.
