National team: Nagelsmann brother on strange European Championship scene with Klaas Heufer-Umlauf

At the European Championships in the summer there was a legendary scene between national coach Julian Nagelsmann and TV star Klaas Heufer-Umlauf. It goes viral and causes amusement. Involved in the campaign: Nagelsmann’s older brother André. He now looks back with amusement.

This moment of embarrassment caused laughter. Many football fans will still remember the legendary pushing-away scene between national coach Julian Nagelsmann and television star Klaas Heufer-Umlauf after the European Championship group game against Switzerland in the summer.

The 48-year-old Nagelsmann brother André spoke again about the viral moment together with presenter Esther Sedlaczek on the Bavarian Radio program “Blickpunkt Sport”. “It was a funny situation. In the stadium, I didn’t really notice who was standing in front of me,” he reported with a laugh: “I only found out about it from the Internet because I was sent this video 1,500 times. But it was quite amusing.”

As a reminder: The draw on the last matchday of the group phase ensured the German team won the group. The players and coaching staff were of course very happy – and the first thing they wanted to do was share it with their loved ones. When the stadium emptied, Julian Nagelsmann wanted to celebrate the victory with his brother André. Video footage showed him climbing over the barrier at the edge of the pitch and walking purposefully towards the spectator stands.

Then a strange scene took place that caused amusement and malice. Because suddenly a familiar face appeared and held out his hand to the national coach. It was Heufer-Umlauf who apparently thought that Nagelsmann was greeting him so joyfully.

The national coach reacted politely, took action – but then decisively pushed the moderator aside. His brother André, who was eleven years older than him, was waiting behind him and he then hugged him exuberantly after shaking his hand. Heufer-Umlauf could still be seen in the background, taking a long sip of his drink in embarrassment.

The scene subsequently went viral on social media. Tennis legend Boris Becker also reacted to this on X, simply writing: “Lol”.

For Julian Nagelsmann and the German national team, the Nations League continues on Saturday evening. In Freiburg the team meets Bosnia-Herzegovina (8:45 p.m., in the WELT sports ticker), a success would mean winning the group. Just three days later, the DFB team has to play against Hungary in Budapest (8.45 p.m., also in the WELT sports ticker). Germany leads the table with 10 points ahead of the Netherlands, Hungary (both 5) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (1).
