Jayden Daniels‘ career is only 10 games old in the NFL, but already the Washington Commanders quarterback has allowed his team to return to success and, thanks to that, restore its image. But, with these results come greater expectations.
“I think everyone knows we’re playing Philly this week,” Daniels said.
Oh yeah, the Commanders-Eagles duel, one of the toughest matches that could be at this stage of the campaign. In addition, for the first time in almost 30 years, the outcome of this meeting will have repercussions on the career of each of the teams involved.
Daniels set the table for the Commanders’ (7-3) most important regular season game against their NL East rivals, the Eagles (7-2), in decades.
Is this exaggerated?
Not in the least. The match between the Commanders and the Eagles – which, among other things, puts first place in the section at stake – will pit two clubs which are four games above the threshold of respectability (.500) for the first time since 1996.
Terry Allen et Ricky Watters. Koy Detmer et Gus Frerotte. Norv Turner et Ray Rhodes.
All of those names were erased from collective memory until this week, as every aspect of this rivalry was put under the microscope in preparation for this prime-time matchup Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field.
Only one downside to bring: the two teams did not have much time to prepare, since the Eagles beat the Cowboys in Dallas on Sunday, while the Commanders bowed to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Eagles, who are led on offense by quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley — rank second in the league with an average of 110.2 yards per game, while the Commanders are 28th. against the ground game, with an average of 142.7 yards conceded per game -, are on a five-game winning streak. For their part, the Commanders have won three of their last four games.
The Eagles are therefore the favorite by 3.5 points, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.
“I can’t wait to go to Philly and experience that kind of atmosphere,” Daniels said. Their fans are passionate, so, yeah, I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to get out on the field and see their fans, to feel that experience. And I know it’s a very nice stadium, very well located, so we’ll jump on the field and see what happens.”
The Commanders’ offense, which is powered by Daniels, has not faltered week after week, even against opponents such as the Steelers, who entered Sunday’s game averaging just 14.9 points allowed per game.
The young quarterback is developing great chemistry with wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who reached the 100-yard plateau for the fourth time in the last eight games, totaling 113 yards on five catches.
The Eagles, who have won by more than 20 points in three of their last four meetings, are aware of the challenge posed by Daniels and his gang.
“He’s a very good player who started off strong, so it will be a challenge for us this week,” admitted Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. He knows where to position himself when in possession of the ball, he is precise in his passing and he knows how to react when the situation escalates in front of him.
If they triumph, then the Commanders would have an 8-3 record, their best after 11 games since, yes, the 1996 season.
“We will be on the road, against section rivals, on a Thursday evening in November. What more could you ask for?”, summarized Commanders head coach Dan Quinn.
