Football: at 73, Claudio Ranieri about to become the new coach of Roma

It was only a matter of first farewells to the “music hall”… Claudio Ranieri, who retired in June, will become, at the age of 73, coach of AS Roma, 12th in the Italian Championship, as well as reported this in the Italian press this Wednesday.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport and the Sky Sport television channel in particular, Ranieri and the American owners of Roma reached an agreement in London this Wednesday. His appointment will be made official on Thursday after signing his contract and he will lead his first training session on Thursday afternoon.

Ranieri, born in Rome and trained at Roma, has already coached the “Giallorossi” twice in the past, between 2009 and 2011, narrowly failing to win the league title in 2010, and a few months in 2019. AS Rome has not wished to confirm this information so far.

4th coach in a year

Ranieri, crowned English champion in 2016 with Leicester, one of the most resounding achievements in the history of the Premier League, will succeed Ivan Juric, who was relieved of his duties last weekend after a fourth defeat in five league matches. The Croatian technician was appointed in September to replace Daniele De Rossi, sacked after four matches.

Ranieri will be Roma’s fourth manager since the start of the year, with José Mourinho having been fired last January.

The Louve club only pocketed thirteen points in twelve matches. It is thirteen points behind leader Naples and twelve in 5th place, undoubtedly qualifying for the Champions League, occupied by its great rival, Lazio.

Ranieri, who has worked for more than twenty clubs since his coaching debut in 1986, including Inter, Juventus, Chelsea, Monaco and even Nantes (2017-2018), left his position as coach of Cagliari in June, announcing that his coaching career was over, unless he was offered a position as coach, a position he had held very briefly in 2014 with Greece.
