Finally clarity about NBA legend Gregg Popovich. After long rumors surrounded the health of the Spurs coach, San Antonio has now released a statement.
Shock for all Spurs fans. As the San Antonio franchise announced on Wednesday evening, coaching legend Gregg Popovich suffered a mild stroke on November 2nd. The incident occurred before the clash with the Minnesota Timberwolves, which they won 113-103.
Popovich is already in a rehabilitation program and will probably make a full recovery, the statement from the San Antonio Spurs continues. However, a time for their coach’s return to the sidelines cannot yet be defined.
NBA insider Chams Sharania reported on November 5th that the 75-year-old suffered a medical emergency. “I was told it was a serious health issue that the Spurs and Gregg Popovich were dealing with over the weekend,” he told ESPN. However, the nature of the dilemma was not yet known.
Popovich has been coaching the Spurs since 1996; no other coach has remained loyal to an NBA team for so long. He led San Antonio to five championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014), and he also leads the all-time list of NBA coaches with 1,390 regular-season wins and 170 playoff wins.
As national coach, he led the USA to gold at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
