Cloppenburg – With a trend sport from the USA, the multi-generation park in Cloppenburg should become even more attractive and bring young and old together. We’re talking about pickleball, a mix of tennis, table tennis and badminton. The aim is to hit the ball over the almost 90 centimeter high net so that the opponent cannot hit it back. Pickleball is played in pairs or doubles. It should be easy to learn and promote social interaction.
The city administration was commissioned by the council to examine the establishment of two pickleball courts in the multi-generational park after the SPD/Left group submitted the application. At the most recent meeting of the Committee for Culture, Sport, Family and Social Affairs, the city administration presented three possible locations in the city. In addition to the multi-generation park, pickleball fields could also be built at the Galgenmoor athletics facility and at the Cappelner Damm playground. The latter is to be redesigned as a “movement/speed” theme park anyway.
concrete or asphalt
As an alternative, the administration suggested building just one playing field in the multi-generation park (18 by 8 meters) and another in one of the other two locations. The committee ultimately voted unanimously to initially only build a pickleball court in the multi-generational park. When choosing flooring, multifunctional use should be taken into account. The area brought into play by the city administration is currently often used for football. Concrete or asphalt is usually used for pickleball courts because the plastic ball bounces best on them. If the playground at Cappelner Damm is redesigned, consideration should be given to whether another playing field should be created there. The administration estimates the cost of one field at 26,000 euros. According to the proposed resolution, the money should be included in the 2025 budget.
Noise issue
Before the vote, one aspect was particularly discussed: noise. The pickleball racket is made of wood and the ball is made of plastic. This causes click-clack noises. Stefan Busse (CDU) mentioned a case from Nuremberg, where residents went to the barricades because of the noise of pickleball. Ruth Fangmann (SPD), who lives near the multi-generation park, is happy every time she hears noises from there. This way she knows that people – especially children – are on the move. Jörg Abromeit (FDP) suggested measuring the noise level of the future pickleball facility and supporting citizens if they complain. Stefan Riesenbeck (SPD) said that the stadium in which the multi-generation park is located is already surrounded by a noise barrier.
