Neighbors, friends and family cannot understand who attempted to kill Marijke M. (51) from Zwijndrecht on Wednesday morning. The mother of three children was found seriously injured in the driveway of her home, after which she died. “She was a fantastic mom. Who would want to hurt her?”
The residents of Jacomo Antonio Carennalaan in Zwijndrecht were startled by a loud scream on Wednesday morning around seven o’clock. “It sounded like a cat’s scream,” said a neighbor. “My wife heard a very strange scream this morning, but she didn’t go to look,” said Paul Meyvis, neighbor and chairman of the neighborhood committee. “Afterwards it turned out that it must have been our neighbor.”
Another neighbor testifies that they saw someone walking away with a hood on. Afterwards they found the woman seriously injured in the driveway of a house. They contacted the emergency services, but the help was of no avail: the woman died on the spot. (Read more below the photo)
Career woman
Marijke M. was a divorced, single mother of three children. Her youngest daughter is 17 years old, her two sons are adults. The three children were not at home at the time of the incident. “She was a really nice neighbor. Smiley, she always waved when she came home or left,” says Meyvis. She lived alone, but sometimes her three children also stayed here. Everyone knows everyone in our neighborhood, this is a very heavy blow.”
A good acquaintance of Marijke M. cannot believe what happened to the woman. “Marijke was a very sporty, disciplined woman,” she says. Marijke M. used to play badminton, at a reasonable level. A passion that she also passed on to her daughter. In recent years, Marijke M. did fitness, and she participated bootcamps: sporting events for passionate athletes.
Divorce
“She was a fantastic mom, a career woman who commanded a kind of respect,” says the friend. Marijke M. worked at a service company that, among other things, was responsible for the Beveren prison.
Yet the woman had also had difficult moments in recent years. For example, she had gone through a difficult divorce from the father of her children. That divorce was only recently finalized. “We really cannot understand what happened to Marijke,” says a family member.
Weapon in mailbox?
The precise circumstances of her death are still under investigation. The court is actively looking for the man who was seen walking away from the driveway, hiding his face in his hood. The laboratory and the medical examiner are on site, and the police are conducting a neighborhood and trace investigation. Neighbors were asked to check their mailbox to make sure there was no object in it. The investigators wanted to determine whether the perpetrator had not left the murder weapon there during his flight.
