The Spanish teams, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, set the bar high for the next few days after endorsing two victories.
Real Madrid advances with a victory against Twente
The meringues crushed Twente with a resounding 7-0 at the Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium, on a night that will be remembered as the team’s biggest win in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Those led by Alberto Toril came out with intensity from the first minute, and before the first 16 they had already scored two goals. Signe Bruun was the first to open the scoringdeflecting a powerful shot from Caroline Weir, who has been fundamental in the white attack this season. María Méndez soon followed him, sending the ball into the red with an unstoppable header after a precise corner kick from Leupolz.
Twente, although tried to respond with high blood pressure and some dangerous hospitalizationsfailed to intimidate Madrid’s solid defense. In the second half, Weir shone in both preparation and execution, assisting Feller for the third goal and scoring the fourth herself, with an elegant execution of a free kick from the crescent. The victory was consolidated when Méndez repeatedsigning his first double with a shot after another corner. Finally, Oihane and Carla Camacho were in charge of closing the scoring in injury time.
FC Barcelona continues in its game
The Catalans showed no mercy against St. Pölten at the Johan Cruyff, where they gave him a 7-0, with goals from six different players. Those led by Pere Romeu dominated the game from start to finish, and although the Austrian team showed a strong defense in the first minutes, the story changed when Ewa Pajor pushed a cross from Ona Batlle into the back of the net in the 31st minuteopening the scoring and the scoring gale that would follow.
In the next 12 minutes, Barça scored four more goalswith Kika Nazareth and Ewa Pajor doing second and third respectively. Keira Walsh, with a shot from the edge of the area, and Clàudia Pina, with an acrobatic volley after a cross from Vicky López, completed the “little hand” before the break.
In the second half, Claudia Pina was in charge of signing her double from the penalty spot, scoring her fifth goal in the competition and reaffirming herself as Barça’s top scorer. With the match under control, Barça showed patience and precision, generating even more chances that finally culminated with the goal of Caroline Graham Hansen in the 86th minutewho sold the score after an elegant individual play.
With this exhibition, Barcelona remains at the top of the Champions group. Furthermore, the Blaugrana team arrives in top shape to face Real Madrid in ‘El Clásico’ next Saturday.
